The Devil quit, but no one got the memo
Lucifer is retired. After millennia of ruling Hell and brooding in his tower, the Morningstar has finally found something he never had-freedom. He has a mansion on the shore of Lake Michigan, a bodyguard who hates everyone, and a calendar with absolutely nothing on it. He plans to spend eternity reading, drinking, and enjoying every pleasure he denied himself for thousands of years.
Too bad the universe has other plans.
A killer is stalking Chicago's churches, leaving priests beheaded with coins on their eyes. Heaven believes the Devil's abdication has let something loose that was never supposed to walk free, and it sends the one angel he can't easily refuse to bring him home. Anael was once the love of his life. She was also the one who betrayed him.
Lucifer wants nothing to do with it. The Court and the Choir can sort it out without him. Then he crosses paths with a burned-out detective, bodies deep in a case no mortal can solve, and a killer who's been leaving messages meant for the Devil himself.
Wayne Cooper is a veteran cop who knows what's really out there. Janice Wagner is his partner, and she's starting to ask questions. Belial is a demon with a taste for torture and no patience for humans. And Lucifer is a bored immortal with a bad attitude who has no interest in being a hero.
Now he has to decide whether freedom means walking away or standing his ground.
Lucifer Rising is the first of a new series in the Dark Crossroads urban fantasy universe, a spin-off of the Luther Cross novels.
