At the heart of this history are three women: Kosa, Stoja, and Sandra, each caught in the gears of major world events, and each finding a way to keep moving forward when it felt impossible.

Sandra’s own journey takes her from a peaceful childhood on the Croatian coast straight into the chaos of the 1991 war.
From escaping through shelled Bosnian towns in a Red Cross convoy to navigating poverty and abusive relationships, her path is defined by the slow, quiet work of rebuilding. Eventually, she arrives in Melbourne, where she finally begins to build the future and the family she always wanted.

This memoir is about what we inherit from the people who came before us, not just their resilience, but their wounds and unfinished stories, and what it takes to carry that weight into a completely new life.
