Her mom is a fire captain. And she's working on Thanksgiving.
Ten-year-old Maddie Reyes knows every color on her family's fridge calendar. Blue is school. Green is soccer. Red is Mom's 24-hour shift. So when Thanksgiving turns red, Maddie is furious. Worse, her mom has signed her up for a new club for first responders' kids.
At Suncook Metro Station 1, Maddie meets four kids who know exactly what red days feel like: Jamal, whose dad is a police sergeant; Priya, whose dad rides the ambulance; Theo, whose mom answers 911 calls through the night; and Lily, whose mom works in the ER. There's also a gruff captain named Pop and a very large Rottweiler named King, whom everyone calls Bubba.
Together they come up with a plan: if their parents can't come home for Thanksgiving, they'll bring Thanksgiving to the firehouse. But plans have a way of falling apart, and when the tones drop, the crew goes.
Warm, funny, and honest without ever being scary, The Empty Chair is for every kid who has watched a parent pick up a gear bag and head out the door. It includes a Shift Kids' Survival Guide page and a section for parents with conversation starters.
Written by a fire captain with more than 15 years in the fire service.
