I thought I knew who the Nephilim were.Giants. Fallen angels. A Sunday school footnote right before the flood.
Then I read Genesis 6:4-5 again. Slowly.
Two verses. That's all we get. The text stops the genealogy, drops the word Nephilim - which can mean "fallen ones" or "those who cause others to fall" - right before God's verdict on the whole world, and then moves on. It doesn't settle it. It leaves it open on purpose.
This book is Book 2 in the READ IT AGAIN series.
Book 1 was the Fall. Book 2 is the Flood. Book 3 will be Babel. Each one is a disobedience, followed by a judgment that leaves a lasting mark we still live with.
In this book, I don't give you one more dogmatic answer on the Nephilim. I give you the clarification I needed.
Every claim is labeled, so you know exactly what you're reading:
1. What the text says
2. What tradition adds
3. What I'm wondering
Inside, we'll walk through:
- Why the Nephilim notice sits exactly where it does - right at the hinge between genealogy and judgment. The placement is the point.
- What the word actually means - nephilim from n-p-l (to fall), how the Septuagint turned it into gigantes and why we picture giants.
- The three ways people have filled in the blank:
• Angelic / Watcher view - heavenly beings cross a boundary (1 Enoch, Jude) • Sethite view - Seth's line mixes with Cain's line (Augustine, City of God 15) • Divine Kingship view - rulers claiming to be sons of God and building violent dynasties
- Why the flood isn't weather, it's an answer - and why even water doesn't fix the problem. Noah's vineyard right after proves it.
- The shared flood stories - Gilgamesh and Atrahasis - and what Genesis does differently with them.
This is not a book that says "here's what's what." Thoughts are thoughts. This is a book for people who want to know what Genesis actually says versus what we've added to it.
If you saw Nephilim on TikTok, in a sermon, or in a footnote and thought "what does that actually say?" - let's read it again.
