How does a modern society arrive at dictatorship?

NAZIS & REDS: A Chronology of the Prewar Years, Part One traces that journey from the Industrial Revolution to the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.

Beginning with the political, economic, scientific, and social upheavals of the nineteenth century, the book follows the forces that transformed Europe: industrialization, nationalism, socialism, communism, racial theory, mass politics, propaganda, and war. The First World War shattered empires. Revolution brought the Bolsheviks to power in Russia. Defeat and economic crisis destabilized Germany. Then came the Great Depression—and with it the collapse of political assumptions that had seemed secure only a few years before.

Told as a documentary chronology, the narrative moves through dated events and the voices of those who lived them: politicians and soldiers, propagandists and diarists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Their words reveal not only what happened, but what people believed was happening at the time.

At the center of the story is the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi movement—from political fringe to national power. By June 1934, parliamentary government had been destroyed, opponents had been imprisoned or silenced, and the Nazi revolution had begun consuming even some of its own.

The Night of the Long Knives marks the end of this first volume—and a decisive threshold. Hitler had gained power. What remained was to determine what he would do with it.
