Inhaltsangabe

How did armies fight in a time when there were no modern supply networks, no national mass armies and no fast means of communication? Why could individual battles shake entire regions but still not end the war? And why did an uprising in Bohemia turn into a conflict that shaped large parts of Europe for three decades?
This book looks at the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648 primarily from a military perspective. The focus is not only on well-known generals such as Wallenstein, Tilly and Gustav Adolf or large battles such as the White Mountain, Breitenfeld, Lützen and Nördlingen. Equally important are the structures behind the armies: recruitment and payment of soldiers, supply of food and horse feed, artillery, fortresses, contributions, alliances and the enormous economic burden on the population.
It vividly explains how early modern armies were organized, why military contractors played such an important role, and why supplying an army was often just as crucial as its strength on the battlefield. The book shows how Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain, Bavaria, the Habsburgs and numerous imperial estates pursued their own political and strategic interests and why the fronts were by no means easy between Catholics and Protestants.
A special focus is on the consequences of the war for the population. Quartering, looting, hunger, disease and repeated troop movements devastated numerous regions. It also explains why simplistic statements about population losses often fall short and why the damage within the Holy Roman Empire varied greatly from region to region.
At the same time, the book pursues the question of how decades of war changed political rule. Larger armies demanded more money, better administration, and a more accurate recording of people and resources. This created a close connection between warfare, taxes, administration and state formation. The Peace of Westphalia of 1648 is therefore not only seen as the end of the war, but as the result of decades of military, political and economic changes.
A comprehensible and comprehensive overview for history buffs who want to get to know the Thirty Years' War not only through its famous battles, but also really understand its military context.
The book is deliberately aimed at interested readers and not at an academic audience. Complex developments are explained in an understandable way and placed in larger historical contexts, without presuming unnecessary technical language.

Parts of the text have been revised with the support of artificial intelligence. It was used as a tool in structuring, research and linguistic elaboration. The contents have been carefully edited, historically classified and checked for factual consistency. In this way, the book combines modern working methods with the claim to offer a serious, understandable and high-quality presentation.
