"If you go now, you don't need to come back today."
That is the last message Mara Winter sent her daughter. Two hours later Lea is dead, seventeen years old, alone on a wet country road. Single-vehicle accident, the police say. Her backpack and her phone are never found.
The evening before the funeral Mara falls asleep — and wakes up on the day before it. And the next morning a day earlier still. And again. Every night carries her one day back, without stopping, towards the seventh of November.
Nobody believes her. Nobody can: what Mara achieves on one day has not happened by the next morning. Every conversation has to be held again, every trust won again, every piece of evidence obtained again. And the man she has been married to for sixteen years comes home every evening and smiles and asks how her day was.
Then she understands the price. For every night she travels back, time takes one memory of her daughter. The first day of school. A day at the sea. Four notes Lea used to hum as a child. And the closer Mara comes to the truth, the less remains of the child she is doing all of it for.
In the end she has exactly one day left. One day on which everything has to happen.
An emotional time-travel thriller about guilt and listening, about the sentences you cannot take back — and about what is left of a person when the memory goes.
