I was born in a cellar room off Vauxhall Road in the winter of 1838. It was in the part of Liverpool the corporation men called the North End. Everyone else simply called it the Sligo Quarter, for the county half its tenants had come from. I find myself in the 69th Irish Brigade in New York City.
