A large share of the disorders in this book were prescribed. This volume reads the chart as an investigation.
Volume Three turns from mechanism to application. It begins with the organs that generate these disorders — the nephron read as a sequence of regulated decisions, acute kidney injury whose electrolyte consequences reverse as it recovers, chronic kidney disease in which the compensations are the pathology, and the endocrine disorders that present as a laboratory result rather than a syndrome.
It then addresses the prescription chart, which explains more electrolyte abnormalities than any single test, and the poisonings in which the acid-base picture is the instrument that chooses the treatment: salicylate, the toxic alcohols, metformin, and the mitochondrial toxins. Critical care follows, with the acidosis of shock, the electrolyte emergencies in which treatment precedes diagnosis, and mechanical ventilation as the one setting where the clinician sets the PCO2 directly.
Special populations — children, pregnancy, and older adults — are treated as populations whose reference intervals genuinely differ. The book closes with a single interpretive sequence that works whether a patient has one disorder or four, and four long integrated cases worked in full. Nineteen chapters, 19 figures, 42 tables, appendices, glossary, and index.
Practising physicians in nephrology, critical care, emergency medicine, and internal medicine; toxicologists and clinical pharmacists; obstetric, pediatric, and geriatric clinicians; and senior trainees preparing for specialty examinations.
