Adventure of the Silver Diver : New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A drowned ballroom in Sherwood Forest. A solid silver diving helmet breathing sweet air. A forgotten vault forty feet beneath Threadneedle Street. On a sulfurous November morning, the domestic routine of 221B Baker Street is shattered by the arrival of a caller in vulcanized rubber. He deposits a mahogany coffer upon the breakfast table containing an artifact of impossible, barbaric luxury: a deep-sea diving helmet forged entirely of solid silver, its quartz viewport still misted with condensation and trapping a living organism of the abyssal deep.Pinned to the intake valve is a brine-stained ledger leaf written in the unmistakable hand of Lord Palmerston-twenty years in his grave-inscribing nineteen London coordinates and the final entry: 221B Baker Street, today.Fifty miles inland, the reclusive Fifth Duke of Portland has discovered his vast, subterranean kingdom beneath Welbeck Abbey flooded with two feet of freezing, sulfuric sea brine. What at first appears to be the tragic delusion of a noble eccentric soon reveals a far deadlier design: a sovereign conspiracy engineered by a cashiered naval genius. From the submerged picture galleries of Nottinghamshire to the pitch-black, brick-vaulted sewers of the River Fleet, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson must plunge into the forgotten subterranean arteries of the metropolis to stop an armored diving corps before the imperial gold reserves of the Bank of England are drowned and siphoned into the Thames. 'Nature will not lie, Watson, even when the criminal writes with the pen of a Prime Minister.'Descend beneath the cobblestones of Victorian London.
