Introduction
The Life You Still Get to Choose
There comes a point in life when the question begins to change.
For years, the questions may have been practical ones: How do I make a living? How do I provide? How do I build a career? How do I take care of the people who depend on me? How do I get through this week, solve the next problem, pay the next bill, or handle the next responsibility?
Those questions matter. They always will.
But eventually another question begins to surface:
Is the life I am living the life I actually want?
That can be an uncomfortable question, especially when, from the outside, your life appears successful. You may have built a career, raised a family, earned people's respect, accumulated experience, and become the person others depend upon when something goes wrong.
You may have done exactly what you believed you were supposed to do. And yet something can still feel unfinished.
That feeling does not necessarily mean that everything needs to change. It doesn't mean walking away from responsibilities, abandoning relationships, or making reckless decisions in pursuit of some imaginary perfect life.
Sometimes it simply means you have reached a point where you need to become more deliberate about what comes next.
Because there is a difference between living a life and choosing one.
Much of our early life is shaped for us. We inherit expectations before we are old enough to question them. We are taught what success is supposed to look like: get an education, find a good job, work hard, make money, build stability, take care of your family, prepare for retirement.
There is nothing inherently wrong with any of those things. The problem begins when we confuse the path we were given with the only path available to us.
Years pass. Responsibilities accumulate. And without realizing it, we can become extraordinarily good at maintaining a life we never consciously chose.
Whatever causes the realization, the useful question is not what should I have done twenty years ago. It is: What am I going to choose now?
That is where purpose begins.
