• Say what happens next, and offer to put it right — the only part you can do rather than say.
• "Will you forgive me?" rated least important of all six. Forgiving is theirs to give, not yours to collect.

It also says what to do when you are not sorry yet, because sometimes you are not — and pretending goes backwards. Children as young as four can tell a forced apology from a real one, and the person who receives a forced one ends up feeling worse than if you had said nothing at all.

Importantly, this book does not tell grown-ups to stop asking. In the research, a prompted-but-willing apology landed about as well as a spontaneous one. Being reminded is fine. Being squeezed is not. That distinction is the whole book.
