Eight candidates. One presidency. And a ninth that has a number, not a name.
Newly elected to Alderwick University’s Council, Julian Mercer expects the search for its next president to be demanding. He has two young children, a marriage under pressure and a growing stack of confidential papers. Then he opens the comparison table.
Eight candidates have biographies. Nine have scores.
The ninth is not a hidden applicant. It is the system’s idea of an appointable president—and Julian begins to suspect that this imaginary candidate is changing how the real ones are judged.
Following the anomaly through interviews, committee papers and an archive file from a search twenty-seven years earlier, he uncovers a standard that moves: one that shapes which questions are asked, whose answers count as finished and who is allowed to advance. No rule has been broken. Every step can be defended.
But Julian’s own account is incomplete. As the search tightens and its costs reach from the Council chamber into his home, challenging the process means exposing choices he would rather leave unexamined.
And stopping an appointment may prove easier than knowing whether it should be stopped.
The Ninth Candidate is a novel of institutional suspense about power, compromised judgment and the price of dissent—a story in which an accurate record can still hide an incomplete account.
Every vote was recorded. Not every reason was.
