Inhaltsangabe

I have visited eight hells. None of them had fire.

Each was built for one person, out of the thing they were most certain was true about themselves. Each looks like somewhere you would want to be: a vineyard in a good year, a farmhouse kitchen with the table always laid, a meadow before a white city exactly as the hymnals promised. And in each, someone is being taken apart by their own belief, slowly, forever.

Dr. H. Brown was permitted to observe. He recorded what he saw, made his drawings, and left. The subjects did not.

The case files:

  • A man at a snowbound post office who finally reads everything his silence said.

  • A daughter given the perfect father she always imagined, every year, from the beginning.

  • A choir singer who arrives in the heaven she rehearsed for, and finds everyone waiting exactly as she wrote them.

  • A father who believed money was love, in a house where everything must be paid for.

  • A woman who would do anything for anyone, offered a narrow place to lie down. Twice a day.

  • A woman who loved only animals, starving in a kitchen full of food.

  • A widow on an endless marsh, still certain her husband had no reason to leave.

  • A good man in a control room, where every rescue has a price.

Presented with Dr. Brown's graphite plates, observation records, and several pages that should not have been included, This Is Hell is a work of quiet, literary horror about the hells we build for ourselves, and the ones we are already living in.
