Inhaltsangabe

A clinical immunology textbook that opens every chapter with a patient.

Most immunology texts ask you to memorize a system first and show you what it means later. This one works the other way round. Each of the eighteen chapters opens with a clinical presentation, develops the mechanism that explains it, and closes by answering the question the patient asked. A nurse reacts to the nickel in her watch strap and not to the nickel in her breakfast. A man with rheumatoid arthritis wants to know what a new drug will actually expose him to. A woman on dialysis asks why her own immune system limits which kidneys she can be offered. The immunology arrives because the case needs it.

Built on one claim: immunology is a reasoning subject.

The vocabulary is a consequence rather than a cause. A reader who understands what a cell is trying to accomplish can reconstruct most of the terminology and will remember the rest because it finally means something. Every chapter is written to that standard, and the book is explicit about the difference between what a mechanism explains and what the evidence supports.

What is inside

  • Eighteen chapters across innate and adaptive immunity, antigen recognition, effector mechanisms, barrier and mucosal immunity, tolerance, immunity to infection, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, transplantation, tumor immunology, and applied clinical immunology.
  • Ninety full-color teaching figures, one for every numbered section, rendered as photorealistic anatomical and histological models rather than abstract pathway diagrams. The book contains no flowcharts: where a mechanism has an order, the prose carries it.
  • Five recurring clinical panels in every chapter. Mechanism in Focus isolates a step worth holding exactly. Evidence Anchor states what the evidence will and will not support. Escalation Alert names what cannot wait. Bedside Insight gives the clinical consequence. Differential Compass works through what else the finding could be.
  • Sourced throughout, with per-chapter reference lists in AMA style and a consolidated bibliography of every source used.
  • Three appendices, a clinical glossary and an index, including therapeutic classes organized by the immune node each one alters.

Who it is for

Preclinical medical students in the first and second years, nursing and allied health students meeting immunology in an entry to practice program, and biomedical science students taking a first clinical immunology course. It assumes general cell biology, an introductory grasp of protein structure, and basic histology. It assumes no prior immunology, no pharmacology, and no clinical experience.

What it deliberately does not contain

No practice questions. Questions written by the author of the chapter test whether the chapter was read, not whether the subject was understood, and the pages are spent on explanation instead. No drug doses, no vaccine schedules and no treatment algorithms, because those change faster than the immunology and differ by country. The text names the mechanism that makes each of them comprehensible and directs the reader to current guidance for the rest.

This book is an educational text. It is not a substitute for current clinical guidelines, local formulary, or qualified clinical supervision.
