Village omens warned them, there would be trouble during the ren'fair. So, he wanted a sword, to defend his family and friends, but his parents said he was too young.

Excerpt: And then there was me, third in line, and always the odd person in the house. We had the mother-father pair, the mother-son apprentice pair, the father-daughter apprentice pair, and then me – their spare child. I enjoyed reading mom’s magic books, but my attempts usually went wrong. I understood everything my father did, but couldn’t duplicate any of it, other than pumping the bellows. Tasking me with their menial work freed up father and sister to focus on the better parts of smithing. Mother had no similar, mindless task for me. So, I spent most of my ‘apprentice’ time at the bellows. Lift-Carry-and-Blame I called myself. Anything the family needed lifted or carried was a task for me, and most times when something went wrong, it was my fault.

Parents’ Guide: Might not be suitable for younger teens. Includes deadly melee combat with an anti-violence message.
