Today we are witnessing a growing interest in everything described as "green"-a term used in the field of ecology to signal an environmentally responsible and sustainable approach. Introducing ecologically oriented activities from the very earliest years means offering children opportunities to engage in everyday experiences grounded in respect for and care of the planet, nurturing the innate biophilia that is part of being human. Outdoor education, however, cannot rely on occasional or improvised experiences. It requires the development of specific expertise, supported by thoughtful design and careful observation, and by recognising the outdoors as an environment for learning with equal dignity to indoor spaces. Observing, designing, educating green begins precisely with observation as a necessary stance for anyone wishing to explore these themes with children. It offers a theoretical and methodological framework to foster the development of ecological thinking, starting from open-ended questions and moving through a rich range of educational pathways. Only by adopting an observational approach and developing projects that meaningfully connect indoor and outdoor experiences in everyday practice can we move beyond improvisation and support in children the growth of biophilic sensibilities and nature-based learning-foundations for a sustainable, "green" education for future generations.
