This selection of eight paintings by Vincent van Gogh attests to the modernity he brought to the traditional genres of portraiture, still life, and landscape. In addition, the evolution of his relationship with colour and composition is clearly evident, which in turn provides insight into the artists temperament. Van Goghs characteristic manner of expression combines both strangeness and sincerity, calm and exaltation, to produce an usual perspective that has since resonated through generations of artists.
