In the hundred years that Panama has been a nation, there has almost never been a dull moment. It was pretty lively, too, in the days of the conquistadors and the pirates... but that's another story.
The construction of the canal, the commerce the waterway attracted, the struggle by Panamanians to regain their rightful heritage and finally the day when the Panama Canal passed to Panama's control, created an exciting era.
The new era promises to be just as exciting and challenging. Restricted formerly by U.S. tenure fo the five-mile-wide strip of land on either side of the canal, Panama has now begun to exploit this land and the facilities and infrastructure which the U.S. left behind.
