The “Burning of the Ribbons” (Queima das Fitas), where, at the end of their studies, students ritually burn the ribbons which symbolize adherence to their faculty, is the oldest and most famous student tradition in Portugal. They do this to celebrate the end of their graduation courses. Different coloured ribbons represent the various faculties of the University of Coimbra (UC). It takes place during the second semester of the final year and is one of the biggest student festivals in Europe. For several years, the photojournalist Dinis Manuel Alves captured images of the Burning of the Ribbons from an unusual perspective: counter-bitten, forgetting the hustle and bustle of the street, he pointed his camera upwards to the windows of the city. This album consists of a selection of photographs of the windows of Coimbra during this famous festival. Enjoy.
