Much research effort is currently underway to improve and implement the area-wide control of insect pests in order to minimize the use of pesticides, and to protect the environment. This volume is the outcome of two major international meetings, the FAO/IAEA International Conference on Area-Wide Control of Insect Pests, and the Fifth International Symposium on Fruit Flies of Economic Importance, both held in June 1998, in Penang. More than 300 papers were presented. This book contains 91 papers considered to be the most valuable by an international review panel. Papers have been edited, revised and updated as necessary. Contributors include respected research workers from all over the world.
