During my time in Indonesia, working with FAO and the Directorate-General of Nature Conservation (PHPA) to plan a complete system of nature reserves for the archipelago, it was necessary to gather together all the existing information on the status of all vertebrate species, including birds. There is much already known about the birds of Java and Bali and I have drawn extensively on published literature as well as on more up-to-date field lists and survey reports.
