The peoples of Anatolia and the Balkans have been profoundly influenced by sufism, the mystical tradition in Islam. The great sufi fraternities called "tariqats" made themselves at home in these regions and encompassed in their embrace a greater part of their Muslim populations. This book is an introduction to sufism, the sufism of the "tariqats" in particular. The first part of this book outlines the most important doctrines and institutions of sufism. Its second part is a survey of the origins, development, beliefs, and practices of those tariqats that had the greatest number of adherents among the Turks of Anatolia and the Balkans.
