Malay is one of those deceptively simple languages that many foreigners learn but few really master. This book is designed to provide those who already have an understanding of the basic grammar and structure of Malay with the additional vocabulary needed to read contemporary Malay language newspapers with ease. The 97 carefully selected readings in this book are divided into 10 themes extracted from news reports issued by Malaysia=s largest Malay language news organisations. Each passage is accompanied by a vocabulary section giving the meanings of the more difficult words together with a set of simple comprehension questions. As an additional bonus, the author has included a special chapter on the differences between Malay and Indonesian. Although primarily written for the benefit of foreigners, it may also prove to be an eye opener for non-Malay Malaysians, who sometimes tend to assume that the two forms of the language differ very little. DR BRUCE GALE, an Australian citizen and Singapore-based business consultant, became interested in the Malay language after travelling to Malaysia on holiday as an undergraduate. He holds a B.A. (Hons) degree from La Trobe University in Melbourne and Masters Degree from the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies at Monash University in the same city. His Ph.D. thesis, which focused on Malaysian political economy, was completed at the Malaysian National University (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) in Kuala Lumpur in 1986.
