The Islands is Dutch colonial fiction from one of the most important writers of modern Dutch literature. First published in 1952, these short stories create perfectly formed little islands of the imagination, strung together like a necklace of pearls - a popular metaphor for the Indonesian archipelago during the final years of rule by the Dutch.
The lives of lonely expatriates far from home (which in so many cases was no longer home) are celebrated with taut, deceptively simple prose reminiscent of Hemingway.
