As China's largest city best known for its pre-eminent achievements in the early part of the twentieth century, Shanghai grew modestly in comparison with southern China after the adoption of China's open policy in 1978. Y. M. Yeung is professor of geography, director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and head of Shaw College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Sung Yun-wing is chairman and professor in the department of economics, and co-director of the Hong Kong and Asia Pacific Economies Research Programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
