David Rosenmann-Taub was born in Santiago de Chile in 1927. For the last two decades, he has lived in the United States. Cortejo y Epinicio (Cortege and Epinicion) was published in 1949 and received the prize of the Chilean Writers Guild. In a country famous for its Nobel Prizes, Rosenmann-Taub was greeted as a new literary icon. Hernán Díaz Arrieta (Alone) wrote: "An entirely new star: unrelenting intensity, vehement vigor, an ability to elevate and poeticize even the most prosaic themes. You feel that you are in the middle of a jungle, always in lush foliage and deep terrain." His nine subsequent published books (among them Los Despojos del Sol [The Spoils of the Sun], El Cielo en la Fuente [The Sky in the Fountain], La Enredadera del Júbilo [The Vine of Jubliance], and Los Surcos Inundados [The Flooded Furrows], which won the Premio Municipal) came out to critical acclaim and have become collectors items. In 1978 the poet rewrote Cortejo y Epinicio and brought it out in a limited edition in Buenos Aires. LOM published in 2003 the long-awaited third edition of this classic.
