Arpaïs Du Bois approaches man’s being-in-the-world in a very personal and intimate way. Her drawings and texts are at the same time sharp and ambiguous; playful and poetic observations of the world that surrounds her. Out of an intense involvement, she reflects on societal issues, big and small, and the often unnoticed moments and events that shape our lives. Amidst the abundance of impressions that come to us every day, Du Bois’s drawings create a moment of stillness and reflection. They are often syntheses of images, expressing as much as possible with a minimum of resources. They offer the viewer a resting point, a way to frame the chaotic reality.

Elk werk wil een uiting zijn van dit verlangen om de wereld te grijpen met een zalvend woord, de magie van de taal en een schilderen vol herinnering. Uit dit spanningsveld ontstaat een betekenis die losstaat van het beeld. Een beeld dat zonder deze betekenis niet zoveel waarde zou hebben. Daar ligt haar weerstand tegen onze tijd. Daar liggen haar leemtes, het ‘niet-gedachte’, haar onvermogen om op zichzelf terug te plooien. Markeren, insnijden, overtrekken, schrijven, uitwissen, toevoegen. Woorden uit de tekenkunst vastpinnen, om deze daarna te laten versmelten met de taal van het schilderen. Alles speelt zich af aan de oppervlakte en binnen de oppervlakte. Een combinatie van inzichten en afbraak van lagen. Elk werk van Arpaïs Du Bois is een doolhof van de geest. Elk werk van Arpaïs kijkt ons indringend aan. In ruil daarvoor kijken we ernaar. Om er iets van de vreugde uit te halen die onze voorouders gevoeld moeten hebben toen ze de levenscycli ontdekten. Om dit ‘vlees en bloed van de wereld’ die Edouard Glissant voorspelde, gemakkelijker te zien als een voorstelling van het universum. Dat lijkt ingewikkeld, maar eigenlijk valt alles gewoon op zijn plaats. Je hoeft alleen maar te kijken.
