The topic of abortion is, in our culture, a troubling one. It excites strong passions, which have provided the impetus for political movements. This is undoubtedly the case in great proportion due to the interest of many of the Christian religions, as well as the interest of many Jews, in abortion as a sinful act. The tone of much of the concern regarding abortion and the proper use of the genitals might in fact suggest to the uninformed that Christianity was more interested in sexual truancy than in feeding the poor, the Gospels notwithstanding. However, abortion and contraception are no longer issues unconnected with feeding the poor. The ability in general to control population growth, and the ability of lower income families in particular to limit the number of children they will have, bear directly upon the amount of food available for the poor. The issue of abortion thus arises against the background of concerns to enable those in marginal economic situations to improve their positions when contraception fails or when adequate contraception or contraceptive information is not available. Moreover, abortion has a special place as an element of women's taking possession of themselves. Humans generally have through technology been increasing their control over their own condition. Nature, which was before often alien and uncontrolled, has come ever more under the control of persons. One might think here of interventions from dams to vaccinations.
