Berthold Auerbach was a German poet and writer. He founded the German "tendency novel," which uses fiction to influence public opinion on social, political, moral, and religious issues. Moses (Moyses) Baruch Auerbach was born in Nordstetten (now Horb am Neckar), Kingdom of W rttemberg. He attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium. He was supposed to be a minister, but after studying philosophy in T bingen, Munich, and Heidelberg, and growing distanced from Jewish orthodoxy through Spinoza's work, he turned to literature. Under the pseudonym "Theobald Chauber," he wrote a biography of Frederick the Great (1834-36) while a student at Heidelberg. Berthold Auerbach was a German poet and writer.
