This publication sets out an initial progress report on the implementation of the EU's sustainable development strategy adopted by the Gothenburg European Council in June 2001. It focuses on quantitative trends derived from data analysis of a set of sustainable development indicators (SDI) adopted by the European Commission in February 2005. The data cover the period from 1990 to 2005 (or the latest year available) under the following themes: economic development; poverty and social exclusion; population ageing; public health; climate change and energy issues; production and consumption patterns; management of natural resources; transport; good governance; and global partnership.
