This is the first of two issues devoted to workers' privacy in industrialised countries. Its focus is the protection of personal data in the employment relationship. Advances in technology have significantly increased the capacity of the employer to collect, store and process information on individual employees and to add data from other sources. The result can be information that is factually incorrect, or misleading files. Such information, including sensitive personal matters, may be collected on an individual without the person's knowledge; it may be used for purposes other than those it was gathered for; and it may be transmitted to unauthorised third parties. The practices of some employers have revealed the vulnerability of workers and the potential for abuse of privacy.
