<div><p><i>Float! Building on Water to Combat Urban Congestion and Climate Change</i> proposes a new way of building: on water instead of on land. Although the concept may seem revolutionary, it is an obvious solution to overcrowded metropolises. Most world cities are situated on the water and have too little space where it's most needed: in the city center. Building on water allows inner-city areas to expand.</p><p>Floating buildings have many advantages. They are both flexible and mobile. A buoyant structure can be moved to make space for a new building, decreasing the need for the demolition of a development that still has a productive economic future. Floating buildings outwit changing water levels by rising and falling with the tide and, in so doing, promote a more responsible water management. They leave no scars on their sites, permitting planners to actively meet the demands of the moment.</p><p>Floating buildings are not new. People of nearly every creed and culture have lived on houseboats since time immemorial. Float! Building on Water to Combat Urban Congestion and Climate Change propageert een nieuwe manier van bouwen: op water in plaats van op land. Drijvende gebouwen lijken misschien revolutionair, maar bieden een voor de hand liggende oplossing voor dichtbebouwde steden. De meeste wereldsteden liggen aan het water en hebben een tekort aan ruimte op de plaats waar er de meeste vraag naar is: in het centrum. Het water stelt binnensteden in staat om uit te breiden.
Drijvende gebouwen hebben vele voordelen. Ze zijn flexibel en mobiel. Ze kunnen worden verplaatst om ruimte te maken voor iets nieuws. Gebouwen waarvan de economische levensduur korter is dan de technische, hoeven daardoor niet meer worden afgebroken. Drijvende gebouwen gaan op en neer met het getij en maken zo een verantwoord watermanagement mogelijk. Ze laten geen sporen na op hun locatie en stellen daardoor ontwerpers in staat om in te spelen op de maatschappelijke vraagstukken van deze tijd.
Drijvende gebouwen zijn niet nieuw. De meest uiteenlopende volkeren wonen al sinds mensenheugenis op woonboten. Architecten kunnen moderne technieken uit de offshore- en scheepsbouwindustrie toepassen bij de bouw van grote drijvende complexen.
Het is aan de ontwerpers uit de klimaatgeneratie om slimme en duurzame oplossingen aan te dragen voor de problemen van de hedendaagse maatschappij. Float! helpt hen daarbij.
