The Sa'dan Toraja live in the highlands of South Sulawesi (South Celebes) in Indonesia. Their daring and elegant houses and rice barns can claim a place among the world's most impress} forms of vernacular architecture. These buildings on stilts, held together by pure joinery wjthout a single nail, and often decorated from foundation to roof peak, are renowned throughout Indonesia and in recent times among tourists from all over the world. With their imposing, curving roofs atop an up-swept ridgepole, they bear witness to the pride of their builders. This is a self-awareness that has been maintained until the present day: traditional architecture has not remained so alive with any other modern Indonesian people as it has with the Toraja.
