Inhaltsangabe

The contributions to this volume, written by social scientists and historians, emphasize the 'societal' aspects of health care, and not the more technical aspects. They highlight the cultural, political, economic and social framework within which the theory and practice of health care in Java operate at present and operated in the past. The notion of health care is used in a rather broad sense in this collection, encompassing such diverse topics as public health policy, nursing, 'traditional' medicine, family planning and cigarette advertising.
The ten articles published here have been grouped under three broad themes: the colonial period, 'traditional' notions of health and illness, and present-day health and medical care. They are revised versions of contributions to a workshop on Health Care in Java, Past and Present, held in Leiden and organized by the KITLV in conjunction with the European Social Science Network (ESSJN).
