The 20th Annual Symposium of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (BARSeL) was held in June 2000, organised and hosted by the Technical University of Dresden, in collaboration with the German Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. The papers in this volume reflect the theme chosen: 'A Decade of Trans-European Remote Sensing Cooperation', and demonstrate the rapid progress that has been accomplished by scientists from throughout Europe. It was particularly apt that this 20th annual meeting should be held in Dresden, city of art, culture and the sciences, at the cross-roads between eastern and western Europe. A balance has been sought between papers describing techniques and methods and those which deal with practical applications in such fields as Agriculture and Forestry, Hydrology and Oceanography, Ecology. Protected Landscapes and Natural Hazard monitoring. An important topic also dealt with is that of information mining, which helps users to rapidly gather the relevant information they require in a directly useful form, which can also be integrated in Geographic Information Systems. This new millennium is full of promise with the advent of systems providing hyperdimensional data with ever greater accuracy and finer resolution. These aspects are also dealt with in this volume reflecting the latest research results of the network of the EARSeL member laboratories.
