First published in 1992. Water-rock interactions play a major role in nearly all physical and chemical processes operating on the Earth’s surface and subsurface. Understanding how these reactions workthrough laboratory, field and theoretical studies-will help provide solutions to many global and local environmental problems that face our society today. Water-rock interactions also figure prominently in exploration and production of petroleum, geothermal energy and ore deposits in continents and deep ocean floors. Our understanding of water-rock interactions in all natural environments has increased considerably in recent years as a result of improved sampling, instrumental and analytical techniques, increased application of stable and radioactive isotopes, and improvements in and increased use of complex and efficient geochemical codes, including those that model the transport of solutes. Because intensive research in this field is carried out worldwide, the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry has sponsored a series of Water-Rock Interaction Symposia (WRI). The first symposium, WRI-1 was held in 1974, and since then they have been held triennially. WRI-7. held in Park City, Utah, USA, attracted over 450 leading geochemists, hydrologists and hydro-chemists from 35 countries. 1bese scientists are affiliated with universities, government research agencies, and major environmental consulting, oil and mining companies. The 368 papers published in Volume I (low temperature environments) and Volume II (moderate and high temperature environments) provide the latest research results in this rapidlly expanding field of study. These papers are of interest to professionals and graduate students in earth sciences including geologists, geochemists, hydrologists and water chemists, especially those involved in the study of natural and polluted systems, as well as to applied scientists and engineers working in the fields of environmental science, energy and natural resources.
