The growth in the number of older people over the comingdecades and the financial and economic consequences this willhave, including for the affordability of state pensions and carefor the elderly, are a cause of concern for policymakers. Thesechanges are referred to collectively as "population ageing." Theirimportance prompted the government to set out its vision onpolicy on ageing and the elderly, including its plan to monitor theresults of policy on the elderly. This publication is the first resultof that plan. It presents a statistical picture of the trend in populationageing in the Netherlands in a number of policy domains,namely, employment, income, housing, health, and care.

Cretien van Campen is a researcher in the social science and the fine arts. He is the founder of Synesthetics Netherlands and is affiliated with the Netherlands Institute for Social Research. He is best known for his work on synesthesia in art, including historical reviews of how artists have used synesthetic perceptions to produce art, and studies of perceived quality of life, in particular of how people with health problems perceive their living conditions in the context of health and social care services.
