Zustand: very good. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff,1973. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. xii,231p. Index. (International Archives in the History of Ideas, 62). - This study seeks to fill an important gap in what has been until recently a neglected aspect of Diderot's work. Taking advantage of newly publish- ed editions of his political writings and the latest research into his contributions to Raynal's Histoire des deux Indes it charts the evolution of his political thought from its emergence as a coherent corpus of ideas to its final position as the dominant focus of his interest. It analyses the genesis of his political doctrine first in his general philosophy and then in his reactions to contemporary political, social and economic events. Diderot's materialism with its emphasis on the identity of organisation of the human species at first favours a morale universelle which can only be translated into a social reality through the agency of a wise absolute ruler. However, his Investigation into human individuality leads him to modify the moral conclusions of his materialism through the for- mulation of a theory of consciousness which posits the necessity of a context of freedom for the achievement of man's reciprocal needs of Individuation and socialisation. Within this evolving framework the genius who is first seen as the exemplar of the self-fulfilling citizen is replaced by the philosophe-homme de bien whose profession of a rational morality can alone provide the dynamic essential for the establishment of a free society. A parallel development occurs in Diderot's political philosophy. Under the influence of the physlocrat La Rivière he draws together a number of loosely related Ideas into a clearly articulated doctrine of enlightened absolutism. However, when Gallani draws his attention to the inadequacy of abstract speculation he abandons it for an empirical assessment of political realities. This methodological volte-face accompanied by dis- Illusionment over Frederick II and Catherine II leads to a rejection of absolutism in favour of a doctrine of popular sovereignty expressed through a limited franchise representative system. With the advent of the American Revolution and the continuing intransigeance of the Ancien Régime Diderot turns from reformism to become the modern world's first effective advocate of political reconstruction through violent revolution, thereby complementing the work of his greatest contemporary, Rousseau. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - I t is only relatively recently that serious attempts have been made to rescue Diderot's political writings from obscurity and neglect, and ascribe to the ideas expressed therein their due place in the panoply of his intellectual and artistic achievements. This has been largely made possible by the transference of the Fonds Vandeul from Diderot's descendants to the Bibliotheque Nationale in 1954. This important collection of manuscripts and papers, to which scholars have previously had very inadequate access, contains the bulk of the political writings, most of which had either never been published, or were only obtainable in badly prepared or rare editions. In recent years, however, excellent critical editions of the most impor tant political texts have appeared; the Textes Politiques edited by Yves Benot, and the Oeuvres Politiques and the Memoires pour Catherine II edited by Paul Verniere are all notable contributions. Meanwhile Jacques Proust has written a major thesis on Diderot et l'Encyclopedie which con tains a detailed study of Diderot's political ideas during the years he de voted to the construction of that great intellectual monument. Most re cently Yves Benot has published a general work with an important study of Diderot's hostility to European colonial policies, Diderot, de l' atheisme a l'anticolonialisme. Furthermore, Diderot's contributions to the three editions of Raynal's Histoire des deux Indes have been identified with virtual certainty by Michele Duchet and Hans Wolpe, thereby opening up a further valuable source for his political ideas.
