Découvrez le dernier livre du photographe: Drive Thru Flint est le onzième point cardinal du projet Datazone. Voisine de Detroit, aujourd’hui ville abandonnée à une désindustrialisation désastreuse, la ville fût jadis le fief de General Motors, employeur principal et créateur de l’objet culte du bonheur à l’américaine. Philippe Chancel accomplit la traversée des lignes graphiques et temporelles de la photographie de Walter Evans. Puis, à sa manière, le photographe plonge dans les quartiers abandonnés, entre dans des maisons négligées et pose les yeux sur des vies cachées - avant le réveil brutal de l'état d'urgence - déclaré par Barack Obama en 2016, pour pollution mortelle au plomb dans l'approvisionnement en eau, une conséquence néfaste de l'échouement des usines. Dans un contexte de grande insécurité, Philippe Chancel "échantillonne le réel". Son action consiste à être là, au moment présent de la catastrophe humaine; il s’agit de se laisser submerger par la réalité, d’attendre patiemment que des photographies prennent forme, sans jamais rien filtrer, mais plutôt de travailler par découpage. Chaque trace inscrite sur la photo compte. En reculant, il cartographie la disparition dans une proposition de reconquête des territoires. Ses photographies réveillent notre humanité, leur présence laissant entrevoir la possibilité d’un retournement.

Over the past 25 years Philippe Chancel's photography has explored the complex, shifting and fertile territory where art, documentaries and journalism meet. His is a constantly evolving project, focusing on the status of images when they are confronted with what constitutes 'an image' in the contemporary world.His work is included in many permanent public as well as private collections.
