About the book >.>.> Italian Drawings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam presents a comprehensive examination of the significant collection of Italian drawings housed within the Rijksprentenkabinet at the Rijksmuseum. Established in 1808, the Rijksmuseum's collection includes works spanning from the Golden Age of Dutch art to remarkable pieces from renowned Italian masters. Originally founded to house Dutch paintings, the museum began acquiring prints and drawings, including notable contributions from Prince Willem V and other art patrons, as well as significant bequests and acquisitions over the decades. The book highlights the evolution of the collection's focus, especially towards Italian drawings, particularly during the directorship of Van Regteren Altena between 1948 and 1962. His vision transformed the Rijksprentenkabinet into a prominent repository of non-Netherlandish art, significantly enriching its holdings with Italian works. Noteworthy acquisitions include pieces by masters such as Raphael, whose preparatory studies for The Transfiguration exemplify the depth of the collection. In the years following the Second World War, efforts intensified to compare the museum's collection of drawings with its extensive repertoire of prints, ultimately culminating in a rich variety of works from various Italian regional schools. This volume provides a detailed exploration of the Italian drawings, showcasing pieces from the Renaissance to the Baroque and Rococo periods. The collection underscores the importance of these artworks not only for their artistic merit but also for their role in the early Dutch market and collecting practices. With this exhibition, the Rijksmuseum reaffirms its commitment to celebrating the heritage of Italian art, positioning its collection within the broader context of European artistic development.
