Chinese painter Tan Ping (born 1960) began his studies in Berlin in the same year as the fall of the Berlin Wall. Together with China's reopening to the West, these events allowed Tan to develop an abstract formal language inspired by Art Informel, Conceptual art, calligraphy and more.

Tan Ping came to Berlin in 1989 to study at the University of the Arts (UDK) and shortly afterwards witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. China's opening to the Western World since 1985 has created new opportunities for a variety of bilateral relationships.

Tan Ping consistently developed an abstract formal language that was significantly influenced by the Western art of Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel, Minimal and Conceptual Art. He uniquely combines these influences with his Chinese cultural roo
