A lo largo de la historia, el mar Mediterráneo ha desempeñado un papel importante en la cultura de los países circundantes. En la Antigüedad, este papel reflejaba puntos de vista culturales y geográficos particulares. Debido a cuestiones de disponibilidad textual, los estudiosos del Mediterráneo antiguo han tendido a centrarse en los textos clásicos, que adoptan principalmente enfoques griegos y romanos, y específicamente opiniones expresadas por autores que estuvieron activos en la Grecia continental o en Italia. Este volumen pretende proponer otra visión: la del Este. Para ello, toma como punto de partida una selección de trabajos inspirados en la celebración, en noviembre de 2022, en Jerusalén, en un territorio situado en la costa oriental del Mediterráneo, de una conferencia internacional dedicada a este tema, cuyos autores se encontraban en una posición única para debatir sobre el Mediterráneo desde esta nueva perspectiva.
