Von der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis in die Gegenwart führt dieser Roman; er spielt in den USA und schildert das bewegte Schicksal des Gregory Reeves, Sohn eines amerikanischen Predigers und einer russischen Jüdin, der seine frühen Kindheitsjahre auf den Landstraßen der Südstaaten verbringt und später unter Hispanos in den Elendsbezirken von Los Angeles lebt. Scheitern und Neubeginn, Umwege und Irrwege machen sein Leben aus, Glück ist nur zu oft ein unbekanntes Wort. Da hilft Gregory dann nur der Glaube an den "unendlichen Plan", von dem sein Vater immer sprach, ein Plan, nach dem sich jedes Leben vollzieht und dessen tiefer Sinn erst im Lauf der Jahre erkennbar wird.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Isabel Allende wurde 1942 in Lima/Peru geboren. Ihr erster Roman "Das Geisterhaus" wurde weltweit zu einem fast einzigartigen Erfolg. Heute lebt sie mit ihrer Familie in Kalifornien.
