The subject of the 18th Semester at the Banach International Mathematical Center was mathematical models in mechanics. For the first time a whole semester in the Center was devoted to the interaction of mathematics and mechanics. The main topics presented were: bifurcation theory and stability, kinetic theory of gases, diffusion, thermodynamics, crack propagation, constitutive equations, boundary layers. Present volume will be of interest to scientists working in the field of applied mathematics and theoretical mechanics.
