Soedjono Abdullah was born in Jogjakarta in 1911 from a very talented artist family. His father the famous landscape painter Abdullah Soerio Soebroto was the first Indonesian who graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam Holland during the Dutch colonial time. His younger brother Basuki Abdullah was also a well known painter with international reputation. It was from his father, Soedjono obtained his first training in the Barbizon style panoramic painting. After finishing school Soedjono worked as a poster maker for several advertising agencies beside working on painting commissioned by his admirers. Due to the gifted skill in depicting or even romantizing the panoramic scenery on his canvas, he was often times considered as a "Beautiful Indies" artist like his younger brother Basuki Abdullah. Soedjono was also very fond of expressing on his canvas the people's day to day activities in the rural areas, such as: a busy market place under a bright red flowered flamboyant tree, or the farmers harvesting their rice field, the fishermen and their boats on the beach and so on. In his old age Soedjono settled in Kertosono, a small town in East Java and died there peacefully in July 1993.
