The present volume the seventh in the ongoing series Cross Currents of Indian History and Culture is a study of the Gandhian Era in Indian politics. It covers the period 1920 to 1947 when India achieved independence. The volume is divided into two parts (1) Renaissance and transformation and (2) A passage to freedom. The first part deals with administration and major trends of Indian economy educational polices development of literature in various Indian languages growth of religion social reform movements and major achievements in the field of art. Part two is devoted to the saga of freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. It discusses the passage of the Rowlatt Bills and the reign of terror in the Punjab culminating in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The situation traces the development of Pan Islamism as a force in Indian politics and also the passing of the Government of India Act 1919 on the basis of the Montagu Chelmsford Report.
