His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck born on 21 February 1980 became the King of Bhutan in 2006. His Majesty is overseeing the laying of strong foundations for a vibrant democracy. He travelled the length and breadth of the country to discuss the draft Constitution to ensure a smooth introduction of parliamentary democracy in 2008. In 2009, His Majesty launched a land reform project to resolve the long-standing issues that affect every Bhutanese - especially the farmers. In the same year, following major earthquakes and floods he immediately toured the affected areas and personally led the rebuilding process. An orator of exceptional talent, the People's King enjoys painting and designing and is also an avid gardener and a photographer. Pavan K. Varma is currently the Ambassador of India to Bhutan. He is the author of over a dozen books such as 'The Great Indian Middle Class' and 'Being Indian'. Mr Varma was conferred an honourary doctoral degree for his contribution to the fields of diplomacy, literature, culture, and aesthetics by the University of Indianapolis in 2005. Malvika Singh is a reputed journalist who has worked with many leading national publications. She has authored several books including 'New Delhi: Making of a Capital', 'Delhi: India in One City', and is the publisher of 'Seminar' a prestigious monthly magazine of ideas and alternatives, founded in 1959.
