N. Jayaram is the director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore. He is the editor and author of numerous books, including Higher Education and Status Retention: Students in a Metropolis; Housing in India: Problem, Policy and Perspectives; and Introductory Sociology. R. S. Deshpande is a professor and the head of the Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Unit at the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore. He is the author of Contract Farming and Tenancy, Crops and Cultivation and Where Water Seeps!
