Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Patwant Singh's books and articles on India, international affairs, the environment and the arts have been published in India, European North America. He has broadcast frequently on television and radio in many countries and has travelled and lectured all over the world, often as the guest of governments. From 1957 to 1988, he was editor and publisher of the international magazine Design. His books include: India and the Future of Asia, The Struggle for Power in Asia, The Golden Temple, Gurdwaras in India and Around the World, Of Dreams and Demons: An Indian Memoir, The Sikhs, and Garland Around My Neck.

Sikhism grew out of the basic compassion of Hinduism and the essential brotherhood of Islam. But it incurred the wrath of both Hindus and Muslims. Because it rejected intolerance of other faiths, as also the caste system and idol worship. It insisted on treating all people as equal, and enjoined complete equality between men and women. Patwant Singh tells the stirring story of how a movement of peace transformed itself, of necessity, into a community which placed military values alongside spiritual, the Sikh solider becoming the envy of every nation's army. How in 1699 the tenth and last Guru, Gobind Singh, founded the fellowship of the Khalsa at Anandpur (featured on the cover of this book); a move which would define every Sikh by a distinctive code of personal appearance, dress and conduct.
